The light gets in from below. A 13.65-carat oval Imperial Topaz, cognac at its heart and amber at its edges — the colour of aged whiskey held up to candlelight. From Minas Gerais in Brazil, the only place on earth where Imperial Topaz of this depth is mined. Seen from above: a tight halo of brilliant-cut diamonds, hand-set into a fine yellow gold collar that lifts the stone to meet the light. Seen from beneath: a hand-pierced lotus. Each petal is carved through the gold so light enters the gemstone from the underside as well as the crown. It is the part of the ring only the wearer ever sees — which is the part that matters.
