VICTORIAN ELEPHANT HAIR & GOLD MULTI BAND RING

A gorgeous antique elephant hair and gold ring. The ring is made of three strands of thick elephant hair that are wrapped in 9ct rolled gold tubes at the front , which makes it a gorgeous feature when worn. The back of the ring has a 9ct rolled gold strap which links all the bands together. The natural elephant hair is visible around the sides of the ring. The ring dates to around 1880/1890; these rings were often bought as souvenirs during the British Raj, when Western European adventurers started visiting India and would commission elephant hair jewellery as a souvenir of their safari experience. The single strands of hair were taken from the elephants tail, and wrapped in gold. Elephant hair jewellery is seen to prevent illness and harm, as well as bring love and luck.
