Echeveria subrigida ‘Fire and Ice’, commonly referred to as red edge echeveria, is a cultivated selection of a large rosette-forming succulent species native to Mexico, known for its blue-green foliage accented with pink to rose-colored margins and its larger size compared to most echeverias. This evergreen succulent forms a single, symmetrical rosette typically about 9 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, composed of broad, spade-shaped, somewhat rigid leaves with a glaucous, powdery surface. The smooth leaf edges develop pink to reddish tones in bright light or under mild stress, enhancing contrast against the cooler leaf color, while the thick, fleshy structure reflects its water-storing adaptation; plants may develop a short stem over time but generally remain compact. Flowering occurs from late spring into mid-summer, when slender, upright stalks rise to about 12 inches tall and carry branched clusters of tubular coral-pink to orange flowers that open sequentially. Native to central Mexico, including San Luis Potosí, this cultivar represents a selected form of the species, historically confused with related taxa such as Echeveria cante. In cultivation it requires very well-drained soil, bright light for best form and color, and careful watering with reduced moisture in winter to avoid rot. It is moderately cold tolerant to about 20–25°F and is widely used as a specimen in containers, rock gardens, and dry landscape plantings where its bold rosette and colored margins can be appreciated. Grown in a 6 inch pot
