Antique American Quilt - Grandmother's Fan - 200x200cm

A Grandmother's Fan quilt from the 1930s–40s, pieced from a wide range of Depression-era cotton scraps in pink, cornflower blue, green, lavender, yellow, gingham, shirting stripes and small florals. The fans are all oriented in the same direction, giving the surface a calm, rhythmic quality; the eye moves across it in a single sweep. The pieced scrap border is a lovely detail, rather than a single border fabric, strips of assorted period cottons frame the quilt on all sides, extending the scrap-bag artistry of the blocks to the very edge. The hand quilting in the white ground areas is generous, with a flowing motif that adds rich texture and depth. Condition is very good with a natural aged patina.
