I didn’t want the face to become too polished or fixed. I liked the tension between softness and mess — the feeling of someone observing quietly while everything moves around them. The flowers and marks drift around her like thoughts, noise, fragments of conversations, or things half remembered. Some areas were painted carefully, others almost attacked and wiped away again. She looks curious more than certain. Open rather than guarded. I didn’t want to clean the painting up too much. The rough parts carry as much truth as the finished ones. Painted on stretched canvas.
