George Horace Kemp was born in Heathfield, near Hailsham, Sussex and he was a 19 year old labourer when he attested into the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1892. He served for 12 years during which time he spent 8 yeas in India bfore spending 214 days in the Cape. His papers confirm he was also awarded the India Medal 1895 with Punjab Frontier and Tirah clasps.
