Over 300 smallholder farmers in the mountains surrounding Gedeb comprise Banko Gotitti, one of the most recognized co-ops for producing coffee in the Yirgacheffe region, one of Ethiopia's most popular coffee-producing areas. Each farmer cultivates at least 90 trees on half a hectare of land and transports their coffee cherry to Huke Washing station on a mule or on foot. For these farmers’ families, coffee is a vital cash crop that supports their livelihoods, paying for school fees, taxes, and daily necessities.
