It has 3 built in selections, 1-2-3 for degree of filtration needed based on your water condition 1 for heavy hard, 2 for medium or 3- for light minerals. Providing you with maximum filter life based on your degree of water hardness It is always best to pre flush your new water filter before connecting it to your machine to eliminate carbon resin from getting into the machine's internal parts & any air pockets. Just push the built-in switch in the flex head and flush the filter into a container and remove any air pockets and lose carbon, when the water is clear open it up and let the good water flow.
