Traditional Milliner's Head of "Marotte" With Painted Hair and Printed Paper Facial Features Carton Mache, Hand Painted Gesso and Paper Collage French, with Inscription on the Chest, c.1870 13" high x 5" wide x 6" deep Ref: 12104 A genuine early example crawling with authentic integrity, this primitive figure is made from carton mache, with a gessoed and painted surface, with applied printed collage details. The printed paper "bodice" bears the date 1860 and remnants of a word beginning with "DAN" almost certainly for "Danjard" of Paris. The breast bears the handwritten inscription "Blanche" and anther illegible shadow of a word beneath. A work-worn and heavily patinated survivor of a fine early example, small in scale but sculpturally compelling, proudly bearing its battle scars and losses.
