The technique of enameling on jewelry originated in Limoges, France during the 16th century, and was perfected in the 17th century, bringing fame to the region where it is still recognized for beautiful enameled pieces today. The process involves applying a white base over a copper or gold disc, then using ground glass pigments, it is applied and fired. In this piece, the enamel has been foiled, giving the scene a depth and saturation that really glows! A prolific enamel artist during the early twentieth century is G. Funck, sometimes signed 'Funk'. Their subject matter tended to lean toward floral designs, with the Marguerite flower a favorite. Sourced in the South of France, this captivating rectangular Limoges brooch has a cobalt blue background with three beautiful white daisy-like, or Marguerite-like flowers spanning the front. Bright green leaves add to the simple composition. Like a little window into nature, it has a dream-like quality you'll love to display on your lapel!
