Shade Cloth for Tomatoes

Tomatoes are sun-loving plants, but sustained heat and intense direct sunlight cause real problems: sunscald on fruit, cracked skin, yellow shouldering (the pale, uneven discolouration around the stem end), and stalled fruit set when temperatures climb too high. This shade cloth addresses all of these without cutting off the light tomatoes need to grow and ripen. The ideal shade rate for tomatoes 40% is the percentage most consistently supported by agricultural research for tomato production. It lowers air temperature underneath by around 5 to 8°C, reduces UV exposure during the hottest part of the day, and slows soil moisture loss. Going higher than 50% starts to reduce total yield, so 40% is where protection and productivity best overlap. Which colour to shade tomato plants? Colour affects how the cloth handles heat, not just how much light it blocks. For tomatoes, this matters because heat stress is often the bigger issue. The right colour depends on your climate and the time of year you're using it. We offer this cloth in black, white, and aluminet. We don't stock it in green for tomatoes specifically: green shade cloth absorbs heat similarly to black but without the deliberate warmth-retention logic that makes black useful in cooler climates. Aluminet Reflective aluminised cloth that redirects solar radiation away from the growing area entirely. The most effective option for heat reduction. Also improves light distribution, which benefits fruit colour and ripening. Hot climates / greenhouse Intense summer heat, high tunnels, and greenhouse production where temperature control is critical. Not sure which to pick? If your summers regularly exceed 30°C and your tomatoes are in full sun, go with white or aluminet. If you're in a cooler region or mainly using shade cloth during shoulder seasons, black works well and costs less. When and how to use it Shade cloth for tomatoes is a seasonal tool, not a permanent cover. Tomatoes need full sun to set fruit and ripen well. The goal is to take the edge off peak summer heat, not to reduce light year-round. Put it up when daytime temperatures consistently exceed 30°C, particularly during the fruit-setting and ripening stages. These are the periods when heat does the most damage. Remove it in the late afternoon once the sun's intensity drops, or on overcast days when the plants can benefit from all available light. Install the cloth above the plants rather than draped directly onto them. Airflow between the fabric and foliage is important: contact with the cloth on hot days can concentrate heat on the leaves. A simple hoop structure, a trellis frame, or a few stakes with the cloth clipped across the top all work well. Secure the edges with clips or zip ties through the grommets to keep it stable in wind. What it protects against Sunscald: White or pale patches on the fruit surface where direct sun has damaged the skin. Common on fruit that becomes exposed as foliage thins out mid-season. Fruit cracking: Rapid temperature fluctuations cause the skin to split. Consistent shade reduces the temperature swings that trigger this. Yellow shouldering: High air temperatures around ripening fruit interfere with lycopene development, leaving a pale, hard area near the stem. Shade cloth at 40% has been shown to reduce its occurrence significantly. Stalled fruit set: Tomatoes drop flowers and stop setting fruit when temperatures stay above 95°F (35°C). Bringing the temperature down by even a few degrees keeps production going through heatwaves. Soil moisture loss: Less direct sun hitting the soil means water evaporates more slowly. Useful in dry summers or sandy soils where consistent moisture is hard to maintain. Material and construction All three colour options are made from knitted HDPE (high-density polyethylene) treated for UV resistance. Knitted construction means the cloth can be cut to a custom size on site without the edges fraying or unravelling. Each panel comes with reinforced edges and metal grommets spaced along the perimeter for installation with rope, clips, or zip ties.
