Nilah leans in closer, lowering her voice just enough. The circle tightens. Someone pulls the blanket up to her chin. Someone else pretends not to be scared; but shifts a little closer anyway. The room is dim, shadows stretching just enough to feel real. Nilah begins to tell the story. Slowly. Carefully. Pausing at all the right moments. A sound outside. A door that creaks.
