Common names include Junegrass, mountain Junegrass, and crested hairgrass. Junegrass is found naturally from Ontario to British Columbia in sandy prairies, open woods, and rocky slopes. In turf settings, it tolerates repeated low mowing. Junegrass tolerates foot traffic better than many other native grasses. Slow to germinate and slow to establish. A faster-growing nurse crop, like slender wheat grass, is recommended. Junegrass is a cool-season grass. Active growth begins early in spring providing good forage for livestock, deer, and elk. Junegrass may be used as a low input turfgrass (e.g. golf courses) and as an ornamental grass.
