Along with the Indiana franchise, they were the only ABA team to stay in the same city for the league's entire run. The Colonels captured the 1975 ABA championship by defeating the Indiana Pacers 4–1 in the Finals. Coached by Hall of Famer Hubie Brown during the championship years, the Colonels' roster was anchored by Dan Issel, 7-foot-2 center Artis Gilmore (1972 ABA Rookie of the Year and 1972 MVP), and longtime point guard Louie Dampier. Despite consistent winning, the Colonels were not invited to merge into the senior league after 1976 and folded — owner John Y.
