The History Venus Callipygia From the Domus Aurea of Nero, before ending up in the Farnese Collection, comes an excellent Roman copy of a Hellenistic original, depicting a semi-nude Aphrodite known as Venus Callipygia (Kallipygos = with beautiful buttocks), compared to another similar deity reportedly housed, according to Athenaeus, in a temple in Syracuse, which could not be justified in a place of worship due to its sensuality. The goddess, in fact, with a more than youthful appearance, is depicted uncovering her body by lifting with her arms the very light chiton with dense folds, tied at the waist, and pleased with her form, she looks back to admire it, perhaps reflected in the water in which she is likely preparing to bathe. The statue indeed seems intended for the center of a small pond, so imagining it in such a context would certainly soften the exaggerated sensuality and the entirely feminine coquetry emanating from her body. It is elegantly modeled in a spiral and meant to be viewed from all sides, almost master of the surrounding space aided by a subtle play of chiaroscuro created by the contrast of diffused and elusive light on the nude parts and blocked instead in the shadows of the curly hair and folds of the chiton. We are thus in the phase when (between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC) Hellenistic art, beginning to explore an infinity of subjects and themes treated in various ways, consequently reached an infinity of results, not always valid but useful for the breaking of certain conventions and the needs of changing taste and life.
