Matisse’s monumental 1909–1910 painting, now in the State Hermitage Museum, depicts five figures moving together in a ring against an intensely simplified blue and green landscape. The Hermitage describes the figures as imagined symbols rather than portraits of real people, linking the composition to ideas of humanity, nature and a mythical golden age. Freeman takes that modern-art landmark and folds it into her own dreamlike narrative. The result is a fascinating dialogue between old and new, human and animal, reality and imagination.
