Buckthorn bark comes from Frangula alnus, a small European shrub whose bark has been used in herbal traditions since the Middle Ages. It is always aged before use, never taken fresh, and is prepared as a slow decoction rather than a quick cup of tea. Key Benefits Traditional European herb: one of the classic barks of Western herbalism, recorded in monastery gardens and herbals for centuries. Properly aged: buckthorn bark must be aged at least a year before use so the harsh fresh compounds mellow. Ours is supplied aged and ready to prepare. Cut for decoction: the pieces are sized for simmering, which is how this bark has always been prepared. Short-term use only: a herb for occasional use rather than daily drinking, as generations of herbalists have advised. Practitioner favourite: most often bought by herbalists and students who know exactly how they want to work with it. How to Use Barks need longer than leaves to give up their goodness, so buckthorn is simmered rather than steeped. Use around half a teaspoon of the cut bark per cup of cold water, bring it gently to a simmer, hold it there for 10 to 15 minutes, then strain well. Keep it to a single cup and to occasional use only. Many people soften the taste with a little Ginger Root or Liquorice Root simmered alongside it. If you are after something gentler for everyday drinking, Roasted Dandelion Root is the far more relaxed option. Good to Know Alder buckthorn is thornless, despite the name, and its small berries turn from green through red to black on the same branch. Hedgerow lore says you can read the season in a single twig. The wood had a second life entirely: buckthorn charcoal was once prized by gunpowder makers, and by artists, who still favour it for fine drawing charcoal today. This is a herb where the ageing genuinely matters. Fresh bark was traditionally avoided altogether, and old herbals are unusually firm on the point. Not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, by children, or by anyone with a bowel condition or abdominal pain. Intended for short-term occasional use only, not daily or long-term drinking. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
