OUR PLANE'S STORY ZA004 was built to test the Dreamliner. The aircraft made its first flight on February 24, 2010, joining Boeing's original 787 flight-test fleet. Its assignments included aerodynamics, high-speed performance, propulsion, structural flight loads, community noise and extended operations testing. That work contributed to the extensive test program leading to a major milestone on August 26, 2011, when the Boeing 787 Dreamliner received FAA and EASA type certification. But certification wasn't the end of ZA004's story. The aircraft remained a working Boeing test platform for years. It performed the 1,000th flight of the 787 program, served as a Boeing ecoDemonstrator testing more than 25 new technologies, and continued supporting Dreamliner development through 2025. After more than 670 test flights, 2,250 flight hours and visits to more than 30 airports, ZA004 made its final flight on February 11, 2026, from Boeing Field to Pinal Airpark in Arizona. The Material That Helped Define the Dreamliner The 787 represented a major advancement in the use of composite materials in commercial aviation. Approximately half of the Dreamliner airframe by weight is composite material, with carbon-fiber composites used extensively throughout its primary structure. 787 PlaneTags are crafted from genuine carbon-fiber composite material from ZA004, preserving not only a piece of an important flight-test aircraft, but also a piece of the technology that helped define the Dreamliner.
