Model: Seiko “Steve Jobs” 6431-6030 Year: February 1983 Features: The Look. This is every basic 1980s quartz wrist watch, and its wall clock aesthetic should have doomed it to an eventual irrelevance. And I’m sure that is exactly what would have happened, were it not for one man. The Man. In 1984, Norman Seeff took a series of photos that would come to define the Steve Job look. From the turtleneck to the iconic thumb-on-chin pose. Seeff captured Jobs so completely that TIME magazine saw fit to use those same photographs for its commemorative cover following his death. And on his wrist throughout the shoot? His trusty Seiko 6431-6030. The Appeal. If you’re familiar with Steve Job’s work, which realistically we all are, you’ll immediately understand what drew him to choose this unassuming Seiko. Minimalist, reliable and uncomplicated. I can easily picture him rejecting the unnecessary complexity of mechanical watches, preferring the “it just works” permanence of quartz. The Provenance. In 2016, the very 6431-6030 Jobs had worn for almost a decade was auctioned off for a staggering $42,500 - making it the most expensive Seiko quartz watch ever sold.
