The Moravian Landscape Moravia is the part of Czechia most people have never heard of, which is exactly why it’s worth going. The countryside rolls in soft waves of vineyard and farmland, the same kind of light and shape that draws thousands of photographers to Tuscany every year. The difference is what’s growing on the hills. Instead of cypress trees standing to attention along the roads, Moravia gives you avenues and orchards of blossom, white and pink, flowering for a short window each spring. Add old wooden and stone windmills scattered across the high ground and vineyards stretching out below them, and you have a landscape that feels both familiar and completely new. It photographs beautifully all day, but it comes alive at the edges of the day, when the hills, the blossom and the vines all pick up colour from a low sun. This tour is built around being in the right place for that light, without the crowds you’d find in more famous parts of Europe. The Blossom Spring blossom in Moravia is brief, which is part of what makes it special. For a few weeks each year the orchards and roadside trees fill with white and pink flowers, turning ordinary lanes into something worth stopping the car for. We’ve planned this tour to fall right in that window, timed against previous years’ blossom dates, though nature never quite reads the calendar. When it’s on, the effect is somewhere between Japan’s cherry blossom season and rural France, but set against rolling vineyard hills rather than city streets. We’ll be out early to catch blossom trees against soft morning light and back out again as the sun drops, when the pink and white glow rather than simply sit in the frame. Between those sessions there’s time to rest, review images and talk through composition and technique with the group. The Vineyards and Windmills Moravia has been making wine for centuries, and the vineyards that cover these hills are as much a part of the view as the blossom. Rows of vines follow the contours of the land, giving the same kind of leading lines and layered depth that photographers travel to Tuscany for. Scattered among them are old windmills, some restored, some quietly falling apart, standing on the highest points where they’ve caught the wind for generations. Together they give the landscape structure. Blossom for colour and softness, vines for pattern and line, windmills for a focal point on the horizon. We’ll spend time at several vineyard viewpoints and windmill sites through the tour, working them at different times of day so you come away with more than one version of each. There’s also the chance to visit a local winery and see where the vines end up, which fits naturally into a couple of the quieter afternoons on the itinerary. Sunrise and Sunset This is a tour built around two ends of the day. Moravia’s open, rolling terrain means wide horizons and very little in the way of light pollution or obstruction, so sunrises and sunsets get room to do their thing properly. Mornings often bring mist sitting low over the vineyards, burning off slowly as the sun climbs and lighting the blossom from behind. Evenings tend to bring warmer, more dramatic skies, especially from the higher windmill viewpoints where you can watch the colour spread right across the hills. Between the two, we’ll be up early and out late more days than not. It’s not a relaxed holiday with a camera along for the ride. It’s a photography tour where the schedule follows the light, and the light in Moravia in spring is genuinely worth losing some sleep over. Why Join This Tour Small group, no single supplement and a guide who knows this landscape and where the light works best at each time of year. We’ll plan around the blossom, chase the vineyards and windmills at sunrise and sunset, and build in enough downtime that you’re not running on empty by day three. This is a newer destination for us, chosen because it offers the same kind of scenery as some of Europe’s better known photography locations without the crowds, the queues or the inflated prices. If you’ve done Tuscany and want somewhere with a similar feel but a different story to tell, or you simply fancy a spring trip built entirely around blossom, vines and good light, this is it. Your hotel in Moravia Our comfortable 3 star hotel in town of Bzenec is close to many of our shoot locations. Breakfast is included. The hotel has free wifi. Rooms are single occupancy ensuite. Practical Details The workshop runs over six days and is based in Bzenec. Group sizes are capped at six participants to ensure a genuinely personal experience. All skill levels are welcome. We recommend arriving in Prague on the morning of 15th April 2027, followed by a 3.5hr drive to the Southern Moravia region. We will depart back to Prague on 22nd April. There will also be the option of 2 full days in Prague – details to follow. End of workshop photo review and editing session On the last afternoon or evening of the trip we often have a photo review. Everyone brings around 4 or 5 edited images to show the group. We can then offer joint feed back and editing advice. I appreciate not everyone may bring laptops for editing, so SOOC images are also fine. Also included is a one hour online session with every guest to help with image selection and editing. Access to Private Members Facebook Community group We also have a private Facebook group where members can join and post images for feedback and I answer questions and give help and advice.
