Twelve X-Cross Motif Ancient Carnelian Dzi, 28.5×11.0mm, Octagonal (Ac-062426-12X)
✦ All photographs on this page are unretouched. What you see is what you receive. ✦ The twelve X-forms on this bead divide across a line — six above, six below — and the two rows mirror each other across the bead's equatorial band. That bilateral structure is the first thing to understand about this bead's composition. A horizontal cream band runs around the bead's full circumference at mid-height, with vertical stripe dividers creating panels. Within each panel, the X-forms sit in two rows: three above the band, three below, each row reading as a reflection of the other across the cream divider. The effect is that every face presents a grid — orderly, evenly spaced, and formally symmetric — while the X-forms themselves carry a softly irregular quality from the hand-applied etching, their arms slightly uneven in width and their tips gently bulbous where the acid treatment pooled and spread. Twelve of these forms in total, distributed evenly across the octagonal circumference, ensure that no face of the bead is without them. The carnelian ground is not a single colour. The dominant body reads as a warm terracotta-red — the same register as the other ancient octagonal carnelian pieces in this collection — but the stone carries natural colour variation that the photographs document clearly. Deeper reddish-brown zones appear at the upper left in Image 1 and at the left end zone in Image 6, where the carnelian's own banding darkens the ground. The end caps and drill hole surrounds read as a brighter, more vivid orange-red where the stone is more translucent — visible in Images 5 and 6. This natural variation is a geological feature of the carnelian, not damage or wear. The surface is matte to low-satin — the polish of the original surface has softened through centuries of handling, giving the bead a warm, slightly dusty finish rather than a high gloss. The etched X-forms and divider bands are sandy-cream to off-white, with a rough, granular texture at their edges where the cream etching has weathered and partially reintegrated with the surrounding carnelian over centuries of age. A dark inclusion is visible at the left end zone in Image 1, and the right end cap in Image 3 shows a worn, roughened surface with minor material variation — both disclosed here as found. No structural cracks observed across any of the six photographs. This is an independent finding. The octagonal form — eight bevelled faces, four primary and four narrow transitional — is the same body geometry as several other ancient carnelian pieces in this collection, including the Twenty Stars, Sixteen Eye & Wave, and Four Rail Track beads. At 28.5×11.0mm it is a compact, broad-bodied piece, its width and solidity making the grid of X-forms across its surface feel dense and complete. The X-Cross Motif The X-form in ancient carnelian bead traditions of South Asia and the trans-Himalayan corridor appears across multiple cultural contexts and has been interpreted variously: as a four-pointed star (星紋 / xīng wén), a protective cross or saltire, a symbol of intersection and meeting-point, and as an auspicious mark connecting the four cardinal directions. Unlike the solid circular star dots on other ancient carnelian pieces in this collection, the X-form reads as dynamic rather than static — its diagonal arms create movement, the sense of something radiating outward from a central point. Whether understood as star or cross, the X-form has been used in devotional and protective objects across the ancient Himalayan and Central Asian trade routes, and its presence on an ancient carnelian bead of this age places it within one of the oldest layers of the bead-making tradition. Twelve such forms — a number of completeness and cycle — extend whatever protective field the motif carries across the full circumference of the stone.
