Late Victorian Miniature Wishbone Salon Suite.

An exceptionally rare and charming late Victorian miniature wishbone salon suite, English, circa 1890–1910, preserved within its original glazed oak display case. Ingeniously constructed from natural bird wishbones, the suite comprises thirteen individual pieces, including a settee with matching bolster cushions and scatter cushion, an oval centre table, together with a selection of matching chairs and stools. Each piece retains its original cream-upholstered seats and backs, beautifully finished with hand-stitched borders, demonstrating the remarkable skill and patience required to create these intricate miniatures. Unlike the majority of surviving wishbone furniture, which is encountered as individual pieces or loose groups, this suite remains housed in its original purpose-made glazed display case, suggesting it was intended from the outset as a cabinet curiosity or presentation piece rather than a child’s toy. The survival of the complete display, together with its remarkably well-preserved upholstery, makes this an especially desirable example. Miniature wishbone furniture represents one of the more unusual forms of Victorian folk art, combining ingenuity with delicate craftsmanship.
