How hardness and household size affect sizing Sizing works backward from how often the system should regenerate. The target is every 7 to 14 days: often enough to keep the resin bed clean, rarely enough to keep salt use down. Both share the same brine tank, the same metered control valve, the same full-flow bypass, and the same warranty. Peak flow is 11.7 GPM on the 844 and 13.3 GPM on the 1054, so the larger unit keeps up better when several bathrooms run at once. Can a water softener handle iron in well water? Yes — well water is routine work for us, and a CC Series system removes dissolved ferrous iron, the kind that's clear at the tap and stains after it sits. What matters is knowing what's in the water before the system goes in. Higher iron levels, oxidized red-water iron, iron bacteria, or hydrogen sulfide call for pretreatment ahead of the softener, and low pH — common on private wells — gets corrected first, since the CC Series needs a minimum pH of 7. Iron also consumes softening capacity, so a well gets sized against hardness and iron together.
