I pulled it out of my purse, glanced at the screen, and sighed. “Damn,” I said. “Something wrong?” I looked at my date and slid my finger across the screen to answer. “It’s my dispatcher,” I said before putting the phone to my ear. “This is Joe Court. What do you need?” “Hey, Joe. I’m sorry for calling. Trisha told me you were off tonight, but we’ve got a situation unfolding in St. Augustine. We have multiple shots fired in Sycamore Park and have at least one victim down. The suspect fled on foot, and we have officers in pursuit now. We need a detective.” The caller was Jason Zuckerburg, our evening dispatcher. I processed what he’d said and then nodded. “Do we have anybody at the scene?” “Marcus Washington. He called for paramedics and a detective.” I sighed. The paramedics were a formality. Marcus wouldn’t have called for a detective this early unless the victim was dead. “Tell Marcus to secure the scene. I’m in St. Louis, but I’ll be there as soon as I can. I’ll work the case, but I’m leaving town tomorrow for an assignment in Terre Haute.” Zuckerburg told me to drive safely. I thanked him and hung up and then looked to Mathias. He gave me a knowing but sympathetic look. “I guess we’ll have dinner next time.” I nodded. “Sorry, but you know how it is,” I said, reaching for both of his hands. I pulled him close and kissed him. He put his hands around my back and gave me a hug. It felt nice. Once he let go, I stepped back but continued to hold his hands. “You mind getting a cab to take you home?” “Sure,” he said. “Stay safe.” “I will,” I said. I kissed him once more before climbing into my car. He waved as I put my car in gear. I turned around on Wells Drive and felt a bundle of nerves in my gut untangle. My last real relationship had been in college, almost eight years ago, and it hadn’t ended well because I’d pushed the guy away at every opportunity when things had become serious. I hoped I wouldn’t screw this one up. My past was...complicated. Mathias understood as much as he could, but we had led very different lives. I hoped he’d be patient.
