Antique French Gothic Wall Plaque Coat of Arms Carved Oak Renaissance c1890. Direct from France, a substantial and highly carved antique coat of arms, featuring bold Renaissance and Gothic designs, created in an era when wealthy families commissioned master woodcarvers to create custom heraldic panels displaying their lineage and status. The shield-shaped plaque is framed with large carved scrolls and acanthus leaves. It features a carved bishop’s mitre and flowing vestments on the left, and a large floral rosette and curved bishop’s staff to the right. Bordered by carved rope twist, the large oval center tells its own heraldic story, with a prominent rampant lion and a tournament helmet above crossed swords, reflecting noble family and military lineage. A remarkable piece of French craftsmanship, the deeply carved oak and rich aged patina give this substantial coat of arms a commanding presence, circa 1890. Measurements: 25” Ht. x 17” x 3”.
