Fretwork Circles Sterling Silver Dangle Earrings

These striking and intricate Fretwork Circle Silver Dangle Earrings were originally handmade by Simone around 20 years ago as part of an exhibition jewellery series inspired by historical metalwork designs. The earrings feature intricately hand-pierced sterling silver panels based on Victorian-era illustrations of decorative metalwork from different historical periods. Simone was drawn to the source material because of its direct connection to traditional metalworking and ornament. Each circular panel was entirely saw-pierced by hand by Simone in sterling silver and gently domed inwards to give the earrings depth and movement. The result sits somewhere between Gothic revival ornament, Arts and Crafts sensibility and contemporary studio jewellery. Originally these pieces existed as pendant panels within exhibited necklaces. For the From the Archives collection, Simone transformed the original exhibition components into one-of-a-kind statement earrings. The intricate fretwork patterns intentionally retain an organic handmade quality. The lines are not perfectly uniform and subtle saw and sanding marks remain visible in the silver, revealing the considerable hand labour involved in creating each piece. The earrings have been polished to a bright silver finish and are suspended from handmade sterling silver ear wires. Although lightweight to wear, the earrings have strong visual presence thanks to their scale, intricate openwork and shifting reflections as they move.
