Black Women Writer's Short Story Lab | 1 Day Online Writing Workshop

Great short stories don't happen by accident. They are built through deliberate choices of voice, structure, tension, and point of view. Our Black Women Writer's Short Story Lab is an immersive, discussion-based experience for writers who want to study how short stories work and apply that understanding directly to their own writing. Each Lab centers on one selected short story, read closely in advance. Together, we'll examine the story through the lens of a single element of craft, tracing how that choice shapes the narrative on the page and influences the reader’s experience. Craft element: Building tension Short Story: "Second-Hand Man" by Rita Dove (1985) This experience is designed for writers who want more than inspiration. It offers a literary, editor-led space to read deeply, think critically, and write with greater intention. This Short Story Lab is hosted by Dr. Ravynn K. Stringfield, Editor at m&i.
