Gunnel Nyman Pendant with Silk Shade, Finland 1940s

I adore this design, and this rare version of Gunnel Nyman's iconic work is fitted with a pleated silk shade, newly fabricated in Helsinki on the original metal form. The effect is wonderfully taupey and soft, the shade color is quite similar to "Drop Cloth" by Farrow & Ball - not too grey, not too brown, like the color of natural clay...so good. The shape of this lamp reminds me of the curves she created in glass before her untimely death in 1948 - the Ruusunlehti “Rose Petal” (pictured). Nyman had a way of bringing nature and happiness into her work, despite her heath struggles. Dora Jung describes the artist like so: “Gunnel Nyman’s (work) speaks of her as a person, of impulsive imagination and warm humanity, of enthusiasm and humility toward the material, of a happy, harmonious person who sought beauty and fully surrendered to joy and gratitude wherever she encountered them—in items, nature, and life.
