WHY THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST CAT DEPENDS ON ALL OF US There are moments in conservation when history quietly changes direction. Not because another species disappears overnight or headlines announce a dramatic rescue mission. More often, the most important moments happen almost unnoticed - when decades of scientific knowledge, hard-earned field experience and irreplaceable conservation work suddenly face an uncertain future. This is one of those moments. For decades, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) helped build the Siberian Tiger Project into the world's most important long-term research and conservation project for the Amur, or Siberian, tiger. Its scientists and field teams created an extraordinary legacy of scientific and conservation knowledge in the Russian Far East. A LEGACY WORTH PROTECTING As the geopolitical landscape changed, however, the ability of international organizations to continue supporting conservation work in Russia became increasingly complex. Faced with the possibility that this important work and decades of accumulated knowledge could be interrupted, the Banovich Wildscapes Foundation made the decision to step forward and assume stewardship of the Siberian Tiger Project by supporting the local Russian NGO Far East Fauna, which carries on the institutional knowledge and personnel of the Project. Today, BWF is committed to carrying this remarkable legacy forward — preserving the scientific knowledge developed over decades, supporting the experienced people working on the ground, and ensuring that critical research and conservation efforts for the Siberian tiger, and the natural landscapes it depends on, continue. We are deeply grateful to WCS and the many scientists, conservationists and supporters whose work created the foundation upon which the project stands today. Our role is not to replace that legacy, but to protect it, build upon it and help carry it into the future. Because conservation cannot always choose the circumstances in which it must operate. Sometimes, when the path becomes most difficult, simply ensuring that the work continues becomes one of the most important acts of conservation.
