It has dark purple/Black culms and grey-green slim leaves. A very versatile plant and can be used as a screen, windbreak, lawn specimen or as a pot plant. It is a clumping bamboo that can reach 2-3m in height. Planting and Care Position in semi shade. Plant with the addition of some organic matter and water in well. Do not let the plant dry out in the first six months, and after this if it's in the ground it should look after itself. Pots of bamboo will continue to need watering. The best food a bamboo can have is its own dead leaves and culm sheaths so leave them to mulch the base of the plant. Planting position Nitida is best grown in semi shade, but will happily grow in a sunny site. Soil Any reasonable soil is ok, add organic matter to help the bamboo establish. Container growing As nitida is a clump forming bamboo it is suited to growing in a pot. Use a good loam-based compost, don't let it dry out and feed regularly.
