A Connecticut-wrapped cigar with a distinctly Nicaraguan backbone, the Room101 Johnny Tobacconaut Gordo demonstrates that refinement and substantial flavor need not be mutually exclusive. Originally introduced by Matt Booth in 2015 and revived with a new blend in 2023, Johnny Tobacconaut combines an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper, Mexican binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos. Handmade at AJ Fernandez's factory in Nicaragua, it reflects Booth's unconventional approach to cigar making while remaining firmly grounded in traditional tobacco craftsmanship. At 6" x 60, the Gordo gives the Nicaraguan filler a generous presence, providing more depth than its pale Connecticut wrapper might suggest. The profile is creamy and woody, with toasted nuts, gentle spice and a subtle natural sweetness. Medium-bodied and well balanced, the blend offers enough character for an experienced smoker without sacrificing the elegance associated with a good Connecticut Shade wrapper.
