Diller helped make room for generations of women who followed her, appearing constantly on television, in Las Vegas, in films, and alongside Bob Hope, while developing a persona that was entirely her own. It’s also easy to understand her lasting camp and queer appeal. Everything was exaggerated. Everything was artificial. And rather than hiding any of it, Phyllis turned the whole construction of femininity into part of the joke. The woman understood presentation.
