Niland: Constants and Variables is a monograph presenting a selection of residential work by Yale-educated Cincinnati architect David Niland (1930–2010), whose houses were previously known from photographs in GA Houses 13. Niland taught at the University of Cincinnati for more than forty years, treating design as a game of constants and variables: size and shape, treatment, and orientation. The houses, designed between 1965 and 1985, range from the concrete-block French House in Dayton, Ohio, through his own home, Mary's House, to the Bingham House in Ann Arbor, Michigan. New and remastered drawings and photographs are by Bennett Neiman, who worked for Niland from 1977 to 1985. Edward Mitchell traces Niland's work to Yale historian Vincent Scully, Louis Kahn, Paul Rudolph, and others. Additional essays extend the discussion, and a 1977 interview with Alix French, the artist for whom Niland designed the French House, gives the client's view. Niland's 1984 lecture and tributes from former students complete the portrait of an architect who believed a few simple decisions, made with care and repeated with variation, could yield architecture of lasting consequence.
