The paste consistency is what makes it work in a hoof: it stays put in a defect where a liquid runs straight out, and it forms a barrier that keeps dirt, manure, and moisture from packing into the space. It's also used as maintenance after an abscess has been opened and drained, and packed under pads and glue-on shoes, where the sealed environment is exactly where trouble develops if the wall isn't protected first. Pick out the crack or separated area and remove packed dirt and debris, since anything sealed underneath stays sealed in. Pack the paste firmly into the crack or defect so it fills the space rather than sitting on top. Reapply as directed, and after the hoof has been washed or worked in wet footing.
