Crafted by Philippe and Cherie Melka, the 2019 marks the winery's ninth vintage from the Paderewski Vineyard, a rocky limestone site in Paso Robles' Willow Creek District farmed by Epoch Estate Wines. The wine bursts from the glass with dark raspberry, blackberry, black olive, violets and lavender, followed by layers of smoked meat, black licorice, mocha, dry herbs and savory spice. On the palate, it is rich and concentrated yet surprisingly fresh, with plush dark fruit, vibrant acidity and beautifully integrated tannins. Winemaking The 2019 was fermented in a combination of concrete and oak puncheons, with the wine aged for 21 months in 70% new French oak. The result is a Syrah with substantial richness and oak depth, while retaining the freshness and savory character of the vineyard. Production was just 150 cases, making this a genuine small-production bottling.
