Making Brooms from Scotch Broom | Thursday, November 19, 6-8pm

Date: Thursday, November 19, 2026 Time: 6pm - 8pm Cost: $80 Location: 205C York St., Nevada City, CA 95959 Workshop Description: In this workshop we will be creating hearth brooms using recycled bicycle tubes and Scotch Broom (Cytisus scoparius) boughs removed from the backroads of Nevada County, Ca. True to its namesake, traditionally Scotch Broom has been used for making brooms. For clearing space. Regionally it is better known as an invasive troublemaker threatening sensitive ecosystems and increasing wildfire intensity. By removing and using this plant material to craft brooms we will be transforming environmental action into an object of utility, an object of practical magic. During the workshop we will also dive deep into all things Scotch Broom including biology, environmental impacts, myths, and historical uses. Each student will leave with one completed broom and the knowledge of how to make more. The techniques learned in this class could also be used to make brooms from other alternative plant materials.
