Monarda fistulosa / Bergamot, a North American native in the Lamiaceae (mint) family, is known for lovely lavender-colored flowers and fragrant leaves that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Although not widely eaten by humans, the flowers and young fragrant leaves of the Monardas are edible and are particularly good in salads and pestos or as a tea. Grows 2 to 4 feet tall by 2 to 3 feet wide. Plant in full sun to part shade in dry to medium soils. Bergamot is tolerant of deer, drought, and Juglone, the allelopathic organic compound produced by Black Walnut trees.
