Komorebi is a small-production project from California’s rugged West Sonoma Coast, crafted under the direction of winemaker and vineyard owner Matt Taylor. A respected figure in the modern California wine scene, Taylor is known for his minimalist, site-driven approach and deep commitment to organic and biodynamic farming. His wines have developed a cult following for their purity, energy, and transparent expression of coastal terroir. Produced from vineyards planted just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean, his Komorebi wines emphasizes whole-cluster fermentation, native yeasts, and restrained winemaking, resulting in wines that are lifted, savory, and distinctly reflective of Sonoma’s cool-climate edge. His Pinot Noir spends nearly 2 years aging sur lie before bottling and then will spend about another year in bottle before release. On the nose, the wine opens with vivid aromatics of wild strawberry, crushed raspberry, and Rainier cherry layered alongside rose petals and dried lavender. Beneath the bright fruit lies a distinctly coastal character marked by forest floor, wet stone, and subtle saline notes reminiscent of the nearby Pacific. Whole-cluster fermentation contributes lifted spice tones of white pepper, clove, and an herbal tinge, while the extended lees aging adds a delicate savory complexity and gentle creaminess to the bouquet. The palate is energetic yet finely composed, balancing purity of fruit with striking tension and minerality. Crunchy red berries, pomegranate, and cranberry unfold across a silky, medium-bodied frame, supported by vibrant natural acidity and ultra-fine tannins. The wine’s cool-climate origins show through its freshness and precision, while the long élevage lends depth, texture, and layered nuance without sacrificing elegance. Savory undertones of black tea, dried herbs, and earthy spice emerge through the persistent finish, leaving behind a lingering impression of lifted fruit, coastal salinity, and refined structure.
