The program is based on prairie–oak (Garry oak) ecosystems and restoring spaces in ways that support local biodiversity and pollinators. MeadowMakers brings together ecological and ecocultural knowledge, practical skills, and shared learning. Through a combination of in-person workshops, field visits, virtual sessions, and an online classroom, participants learn: How to transition lawns and disturbed areas into native meadows Site preparation and meadow establishment using prairie–oak species Native plant identification and local ecology Cultural relationships to land and ecocultural perspectives Pollinator relationships and habitat creation Basic native plant propagation techniques How to apply these approaches in spaces like yards, boulevards, and community sites Participants learn alongside local practitioners, researchers, and Indigenous knowledge holders, while building the skills and confidence to carry out this work in real settings. MeadowMakers also creates space for connection, bringing together people who are learning, trying things out, and supporting each other in this work. What You’ll Gain A clear pathway for transforming lawn into native meadow habitat Practical, place-based skills using prairie–oak species Knowledge of native plants, pollinators, and wildlife relationships Hands-on experience with site preparation, planting, and propagation Guidance for applying these methods in your own space Exposure to ecocultural perspectives, including learning from Indigenous knowledge holders and participants within the program Access to shared resources and recorded sessions Connection to a supportive and growing community Program Format (2026 Example) Dates: March 29 – June 21, 2026 Format: Virtual sessions, in-person workshops, and local field trips Cost: $450 + GST (10 modules) Visit our 2026 Program Schedule.
