Domaine LeFlaive, Macon-Verze 2023
Region: Mâcon-Verzé AOC, Mâconnais, Burgundy, France Varietal: 100% Chardonnay Producer: The Leflaive family has been rooted in Puligny-Montrachet since 1717, but it was Joseph Leflaive in the early 20th century who assembled the domaine into its current form — acquiring parcels in Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Les Pucelles, and pioneering estate bottling at a time when most producers sold their fruit to négociants. His granddaughter Anne-Claude took the domaine to its modern pinnacle, converting entirely to biodynamic viticulture by 1996 and introducing concrete egg-shaped fermentation vessels that keep the wine in constant gentle motion — a practice as philosophically Leflaive as it is practically sound. She passed away in 2015, and today the fourth generation is represented by Brice de La Morandière, who continues the same philosophy of terroir respect, natural farming, and minimal intervention that defines every wine the domaine makes. Vineyard & Winemaking: The Mâcon-Verzé represents the domaine's deliberate expansion into the Mâconnais, with five parcels — Les Chênes, En Perret, Le Monté, Escolles, and Les Muses — acquired in 2003 and farmed biodynamically from the very first vintage. The vineyards total 9.3 hectares on calcareous clay soils with limestone and marl in the Verzé commune, with vines ranging up to 85 years old. Hand-harvested fruit is pressed on site in Verzé then transported daily to Puligny-Montrachet for fermentation and aging — a logistical commitment that signals exactly how seriously Leflaive treats this appellation-level wine. Fermentation occurs primarily in stainless steel and concrete, with a small percentage in oak, aged approximately 10 months on lees before racking and a further 6 months on fine lees before bottling. Tasting Notes: The result is what the domaine itself calls a wine of great purity — floral and mineral, with lively, vibrant energy that makes it more immediately expressive than Leflaive's Puligny village wines. Expect white peach, citrus blossom, and green apple on the nose, with a precise, clean, and lightly spiced palate driven by the limestone soils' characteristic mineral tension. The body has real weight without heaviness, and the finish is long, fresh, and quietly complex. This is Leflaive's entry point — and one of the most quietly thrilling values in all of white Burgundy.
