Victorian Ridgway Jasperware Jug

One of the principal Staffordshire-producing dynasties with a large number of family members and business enterprises operating until the late 20th century, the name Ridgway was synonymous with high quality pottery and earthenware for more than two centuries. Established in 1794 with multiple pottery works operating in the region, the prolific Ridgways focused their efforts on appealing to the middle and upper parts of the decorative wares market. Name recognition for the numerous Ridgways operations was greatly enhanced by the good fortune of John Ridgway, named "Royal Potter" to Queen Victoria following the Great Exhibition of 1851, reviving a title Queen Charlotte had previously given to Josiah Wedgwood. Largely unmarked it can often be tricky to identify Ridgway pieces, but not so this exquisite cobalt-hued Victorian Jasperware Jug executed in the company's Paxton silhouette at the Bedford works location in Hanley. Dating from the mid-Victorian era, most likely the 1850s, this signature style features a distinctive braided handle and applied botanical motif. Prettily embellished with striking white relief-moulded stoneware sprigging, this magnificent pitcher remains lovely as ever. Highly valued among collectors, the expert execution and quality of Ridgway's intricate relief ornamentation is unmatched.
