Clare’s work is an intertwining of ceramics and hand stitching. The inspiration behind this fusion was the inheritance of a treasured collection of hand-stitched textiles crafted by women in her family, including her mother. As an immigrant to Australia these fabrics were a link through time and space to her family, connecting her to the hands and the lives of the people who created them and they inspired her to begin creating her own stitched ‘samplers’. The ‘mark-making’ aspect of stitching became a focus of her practice which led to the development of her embossing technique as a way of transferring the stitches onto clay. What you will learn: This comprehensive workshop is designed for ceramic artists looking to expand their hand-building and slab-building skills and incorporate new decorative techniques into their work. It has evolved from her love of textiles, hand-stitching and mark-making on clay and is an approach to hand building with intricately decorated slabs which has developed over many years through experimentation and refinement in her ceramic practice. The emphasis is on learning a range of different skills that can continue to be built on by participants as they explore these methods in their own practices.
