Wisconsin "Forward" Flag Redesign
🏴 3' x 5' redesigned Wisconsin flag redesign with grommets and double stitched edges to reduce fraying. ✍️ Design Notes by Vexillographer Alex Ferrando: This Wisconsin flag redesign is the winner of Flags in Focus’s Great American Reflag Competition, held in honor of the United States’ 250th anniversary (Semiquincentennial)(a huge thank you to Tareth, Michael and everyone involved). Before getting into the design itself, i want to acknowledge where Wisconsin’s current flag comes from: it was originally made for regiments from Wisconsin to fly during the Civil War. We need to honor that history. Blue and yellow were chosen as they are the principal colors in the current state flag. The specific shades are borrowed from the Milwaukee People’s Flag, which I’m a big fan of. The arrow motif is inspired by Flags for Good’s Wisconsin redesign and references Wisconsin’s state motto, “Forward”. This mirrored color design has a formal name in heraldry and vexillology: counterchanging. It is common in flags in the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and a few other European countries. I wish it were used more in the US flag redesign scene. I hope this design encourages more designers to explore it — it’s a simple technique that produces really striking results.
