Misfit

Mifit, the patchouli-based fragrance from American indie line Arquiste, was launched in 2019. Patchouli is a polarizing note in perfumery, often associated with hippies and head shops. This all changed with the creation of synthetic patchouli oils, engineered to let perfumers choose which patchouli features to remove or keep. Patchouli has gone in and out of fashion for centuries, and it’s this in-and-out-of-fashion cycle that is the inspiration for Misfit. On me, Misfit bursts open with bergamot, bright and bitter, joined by musky, earthy carrot seed. Angelica root has a muskiness that complements the carrot seed, while adding a whiff of sweetness before French lavender comes in. On me, it's fresh, camphorous, and smoky, and links to a note of earthy, warm, smoky, faceted Black tea, with undertones of dried leaf. As it settles, it gets woody from Akigalawood™, a synthetic that smells like patchouli with aspects of pepper and agarwood. Bulgarian rose, rich and lush, adds opulence to the juice. Ambrette seed extends the rose and echoes the muskiness at the opening, giving Misfit sensual warmth. It’s joined by balsamic resinous, styrax, its warm, leathery and smoky aspects add depth to the fragrance, as well as an animalic glint. At the base, patchouli is the star, where a combination of two patchouli essences is used. The patchouli blend is earthy and woody, with a very uncomplicated patchouli scent. It's not dirty, spicy, dark or camphorous but smooth and sophisticated. This is a patchouli I’ve never smelled before. Woody and herbaceous cistus adds those dimensions to the patchouli, while tolu balsam, ambery-sweet, balsamy, rich and complex joins with creamy, sweet tonka bean to counterbalance the patchouli's earthiness. In Misfit, everything is in perfect balance. Misfit opens with the smell of a wooden box that once held clothing, packed with dry patchouli leaves, but dries down to a refined, sophisticated, and surprisingly seductive scent.
