Brighton-based artist Antonia Hazlewood creates immersive abstract works exploring movement, consciousness and the hidden rhythms that shape nature and human experience. Undergrowth marks a pivotal moment in Hazlewood’s practice. Developed slowly over more than a year, the painting evolved through layers of paint and water, with each stage allowed to build, shift and distort over time. The resulting forms evoke a rain-soaked garden or overgrown allotment, where foliage, colour and tangled marks appear to emerge organically from the canvas. As the work developed, Hazlewood found herself reminded of an abstract painting by her great uncle, Robin Hazlewood, which hung in her childhood home. Though abstract, she remembers the work as carrying a sense of struggle and deep emotion. Undergrowth holds something of that same feeling for the artist – a sense of melancholy balanced by hope, with an energy that remains distinctly alive. The title comes from a quote by Grayson Perry: “Ideas are like furry little creatures in the undergrowth.” For Hazlewood, the connection is instinctive rather than literal, fitting a painting shaped by memory, nature and ideas gradually surfacing over time. An original painting that feels, in the artist's words, “woven into time". Acrylic and charcoal on canvas. 91 x 122cm This artwork is priced at £5,400 - Get in touch to discuss the shipping options available.
