Look at Kilim Amber 751 from across the room and you see rows. Step closer and every shape in those rows turns out to be its own small painting. A warm, rust orange ground carries column after column of honeycomb shaped medallions, each one filled with a different combination of pattern and colour, cobalt blue on one, mustard and turquoise on the next, deep purple with olive green further along. A narrower border of small diamonds runs the perimeter in the same fiery orange, holding the whole composition together without competing with it. Nothing repeats exactly, which is precisely what gives a kilim like this its quiet, handmade authority. That variation only happens because someone wove it that way on purpose.
