Handwoven in the highlands of Guatemala The Beatriz is made through three stages of craft: the cotton textile is handwoven and hand-dyed on a backstrap loom, worn around the waist, using techniques rooted in ancient Mayan tradition; the embroidery is completed by hand; and the hem is finished with hand-crochet detailing. From first thread to finished garment, the Beatriz takes as long as 45 days to complete. Like the Evelyn, the Beatriz keeps the huipil's traditional rectangular construction, draping loosely rather than following the more fitted shape of the Leonore or Gabrielle. The hand-crocheted hem adds both length and a layer of intricate detail at the bottom edge, giving the Beatriz a bit more coverage while keeping that same relaxed, adaptable drape. Provenance This piece comes from a weaving cooperative of women in the highlands of Guatemala who have practiced this craft for generations, using natural dyes and materials passed down through their families. Larkin Lane has worked directly with these artisans for ten years. How to Wear It Paired with evening pants or a skirt, the Beatriz carries its own quiet polish into any gathering. Product Details Fabric: hand woven and hand-dyed cotton; some embroidery threads are rayon Construction time: up to 45 days Origin: highlands of Guatemala Care instructions: Due to the delicate nature of the hand-crochet edge, we recommend dry cleaning or hand washing and laying flat to dry.
