Bidjar · Kurdistan · Vintage 1970s–80s · Herati Vintage Bidjar Rug 159 × 114 cm · Herati on Brilliant Orange Red A Bidjar from the 1970s or 80s — the classic Herati field drawn edge to edge in brilliant orange red, with a small celadon medallion and navy corner spandrels. Provenance and Heritage Bidjar, in the Kurdish highlands of western Iran, gives its name to the densest and most durable hand-knotted rugs in the Persian canon — the pile is beaten down so firmly while the wool is still damp that collectors have long called them the “iron rugs of Persia.” The construction is what allows a Bidjar to lie flat without a backing and to hold its shape over decades. Design and Construction The field is worked entirely in the Herati pattern — the diamond lattice with curved leaves and rosettes that gives the design its other name, Mahi, the fish. Here it runs unbroken from border to border across a brilliant orange-red ground, drawn in navy, ivory, olive and rose. The colour is the first thing you notice: a clear, high-keyed red-orange rather than the deep madder most Bidjars carry. At the centre sits a small cusped medallion in celadon and gold ochre with a rose and grey heart — deliberately modest, so the field keeps the eye. The four corner spandrels are navy and grey-blue with floral sprays. The main border runs on deep navy with a palmette vine, framed by broad gold-ochre bands and ivory guard stripes, and closed with a red selvedge. Quality Knotted at approximately 400,000 knots per square metre, or roughly 260 kpsi (knots per square inch), with an 8 mm pile on a cotton foundation. Presence in the Room At 159 × 114 cm (1.81 m²) this is a versatile small format: In front of a sofa: large enough to anchor a seating area without covering the floor. Dining nook or study: under a small table, where the dense Herati rewards a second look. Entrance hall: the warm orange red carries a room with cool grey or white walls.
