Clematis virginiana | woodbine
Clematis virginiana, commonly known as woodbine or American virgin's bower, is a fragrant climber that puts out masses of creamy-white blooms from late summer through early fall. This vine is a wonderful native alternative to the ever popular, yet sadly invasive Sweet Autumn Clematis (C. terniflora). Pruning tip: C. virginiana blooms on current years growth. Prune it back hard (to 12") in fall just after flowering or from late winter to early spring. Hint: these plants are vigorous growers and vigorous self-seeders. Make sure you have the garden space and the desire to manage before planting. Zone: 3 to 8 Family: Ranunculaceae Type: deciduous vine Height: 12 to 20 ft. Spead: 3 to 6 ft. Exposure: Full sun to part shade Conditions: average, moist, well-drained Bloom Time: August to October Native Range: eastern North America
