A fine Kashmiri pashmina ring shawl (Palladar) in charcoal grey, its field woven with rows of black paisley medallions on a scatter of tiny flowers, and finished at both ends with a deep pallu of large paisleys in rust, copper, sage and rose. The name comes from the test. A Palladar is a shawl fine enough to be drawn whole through a finger ring — the traditional proof of fine Kashmiri pashmina. Yarn this fine breaks if the loom is pushed, so the weaving is slow and careful, and there is no shortcut to a cloth that passes. The ring is simply the proof. Two shawls in one The field and the ends are deliberately opposite. Across the body, the pattern is quiet and dark — paisley medallions in a neat lattice, black on charcoal, with small trailing flowers filling every gap between them. It reads almost plain from a distance and only resolves into pattern up close. Then the pallas take over. Each end carries a broad band of interlocking paisleys and flowering vines in warm rust and copper, shaded with sage, dusty rose and old gold, framed by a narrow running border. The colour is all woven in, not printed or stitched on, so the pattern is the same from both sides. Worn draped, the dark field sits over the shoulders and the rust ends fall to the front, which is exactly what they are designed to do. The colour Charcoal is the easiest dark neutral in the range — softer than black, with a faint warmth that suits the rust ends. It goes over black, grey, camel and white equally well, and lets the pallas carry the outfit.
